Paleostomi Lake

Georgia is a unique country that has unlimited opportunities in tourism. In case of improvement, to attract tourists in western Georgia, between Guria and Samegrelo you will meet one unique lake - Paleostomi, the name of which is of Greek origin and means "old shore" or "old confluence".

Until 1924 the Paleostomi Lake was full of fresh water. This is a rare phenomenon, when so close to the sea was such a large lake with fresh water. This year, with the help of a special excavated canal, Paleostomi was connected to the sea. The canal has expanded, and it is already connected with the sea by a large strait. The development of Paleostomi Lake in natural balanced conditions lasted for millennia. In the near past, the lake together with peat bogs and forests created a unique landscape and from the Georgian lakes was one of the natural reservoirs rich in fish, where more than four dozen species of fish live.

Paleostomi Lake is one of the real candidates among those places that can contribute to the development of tourism in Georgia. Not to mention its unique views and landscapes, this is a unique place even for watching birds flying by here. One of the main places of stop and wintering, flying from Europe to Eurasia of birds, is Paleostomi Lake. At the present time, interest in birds is so great that a separate type of tourism has formed - "Birdwatching". Accordingly, from this side the lake also has a tourist potential.
