Javakheti Protected Areas were established in 2011. They include Javakheti National Park, Bugdasheni, Khanchali, Madatapa, Sulda and Kartsakhi Managed Reserves. They are located on the Javakheti Plateau, in the region of Samtskhe-Javakheti, in the territory of the municipalities of Akhalkalaki and Ninotsminda and their area is 16614 hectares.
There are lots of lakes on Javakheti Plateau, including the biggest one – Lake Paravani. The highest point of Javakheti is the mount Didi Abuli at the height of 3300 meters above sea level. Javakheti Plateau is the coldest place among the settlements. It is characterized by a dry continental climate, while the average annual temperature is quite low. In winter Javakheti lakes freeze for a long time In Samsari Range zone 62 species of plants are recorded, among them 3 local and 14 Caucasian endemics, other species are widespread in the southern Caucasus and Asia Minor. In sough ecosystems there are numerous endemic species: 15 species of plants, among them 12 Caucasian and 3 Georgian endemics.
Javakheti stands out by its charming nature. There are diverse pastures, volcanic weathered mountains and lakes of unique beauty.
Javakheti Protected Areas are of exceptional beauty which is hard to find anywhere else.
