Alaverdi Monastery

The monastery, which was founded in the VI century, Joseph Alaverdeli (one of 13 Assyrian fathers), is located in the Alazani Valley, against the backdrop of the snowy mountains of the Caucasian range, 20 km from Telavi. Alaverdi was a man's monastery. In the XVII-XVIII century, a women's monastery was founded here, in which the members of the royal family who were tonsured in nuns lived. Alaverdi is an important educational church center. In the monastery you can taste the monastic wine, made according to the Georgian traditions in Kvevri. In the VIII-X centuries archeologists discovered the remains of the oldest cellar in the yard of the monastery of Alaverdi, which was equipped with Kvevri of various sizes. In the XI century, King Kvirike the Great Alaverdi together with St. George's Cathedral, erected a cellar corresponding to the monastery.
